Tips for your Fresh 48 Session

July 9, 2019

The first 48 hours after the birth of your baby is one of the most magical times of  your life. Seeing their squishy faces, snuggling their warm, fuzzy bodies, and introducing them to their older siblings is something you always want to remember, which is why you hired a photographer. Now you want to make sure the session comes off without a hitch. Here are some tips to do just that!

Fresh 48 | Stephenson Family Session

May 13, 2019

Mericar reached out to me on Instagram and when she told me she was planning on doing a waterbirth, I was so in that I was practically in the tub with her (see what I did there?) We met up at Twisted Sugar and enjoyed a cookie or two while we talked about what she could expect from me as her photographer and what she was hoping for with her birth.

Fast forward a couple of months and this appeared in my messenger inbox:

cont'd from Birth Photography | Parkinson C-Section...

I was able to return a couple of days later to take some photos of the new family together, which is always a treat for me. It was pretty clear that this was one lucky baby with a completely obsessed mother and father!

This shoot may be my favorite shoot to date. Spending time with these families, whether during the birth or shortly after, you get to immerse yourself for however many hours in the pure joy and feeling of new beginning. Maybe that's why I love birth photography so much. It's a fresh start. A new beginning. A perfect baby.

Being a birth photographer means you get to meet all different kinds of personalities and see how delivery methods differ from each other. I've been in births where I barely spoke a word, afraid to break the silence or the focus of the mother as she brought her new child to life. I've also been in births where moms and dads crack jokes the entire time. This family was definitely the latter!

After over 14 hours of hard labor, Ahlisha looked at me and said, "I'm sorry, Susan. You've been here so long." I told her not to worry about it because it's all a part of the job and I didn't want to miss any of her story, and then she replied, "It's not much of a story."

You get two births two weeks in a row because I shot them both on the SAME DAY! Within 15 minutes of each other. Not even kidding. Luckily they were both in the same hospital, so I was "Father of the Bride" -ing up and down the hall to each family. I'm sure the nurses thought I was hilarious, except the one that was just really confused to have seen me at one birth, then see me again at another one. In that case, I thought that she was hilarious. ;)

The room was absolutely silent. Six people and not one of us made a peep as Ashley took each wave with perfect grace. Even though she told me later that her body was screaming through all the silence, the best way I can describe her birth story is beautiful and even sacred.

So the thing I love about Megan is that since taking her birth photos, we have hung out three times and she's not afraid to point out my mom fails. Haha! Everyone needs that friend in their lives that will just say it as it is!

Photography | My Purpose

May 17, 2017

A couple of weeks ago, I had the incredible experience of shooting a birth. Han and I first met at the CrEATe Donuts get-together almost two years ago in July and have strengthened our friendship via social media since. When we got together a couple of months before her due date, we decided to do a birth shoot together. I'd never done a birth shoot before but was excited to give it a shot (you see what I did there?)
