A few days ago, I asked my Instagram followers which session photos they liked better, lifestyle or wrapped/posed, and the majority voted lifestyle, but there may be a few of you out there who aren't sure, so let me talk to you about that for a sec.
What are the pros of a lifestyle photo session?
The best thing about lifestyle newborn session is the emotion. It's more about the feeling with these photos that typically work with natural light, utilizing angles and shadows to create that kind of "drama" that you see in the photos.
An added element with lifestyle newborn photos is that they can be taken in your own home. You document not only what your baby looked like before they grew so rapidly, but the place they grew up in, and that's pretty special. PLUS! You get to be in the photos, too! Imagine your child growing up seeing pictures of the love in your eyes as you're looking at them.
What are the drawbacks?
I think the most important thing to have when you're deciding on which newborn session you want is proper expectations. Part of what makes the really beautiful lifestyle sessions so beautiful is the house and decor. Now, this isn't to say that you must have a perfectly Pinterest-worthy home to get beautiful photos, but a nicely made bed and clutter-free room can go a long way. A finished nursery is a bonus.
Another possible drawback may be your lighting situation. Non-professional Artificial light is not ideal for lifestyle newborn photographers. It tends to make our photos turn an unpleasant yellow-orange color that's difficult to work with in post, which is why we depend on windows to let the light in. However, this can be maneuvered around if your photographer brings a flash. Just depends on your photographer's tools and abilities.
So what should I do if I want a lifestyle newborn session?
The master bedroom is a popular spot for lifestyle newborn sessions for good reason. The bed makes a perfect spot for photos without mom and dad and offers a multitude of posing opportunities. Tidy up your bedroom so that there is nothing cluttering either side of the bed, open your windows WAY up, and make your bed (obviously). If you don't have the nicest bedspread, consider just having solid-colored sheets on your bed. ALSO, plan on wearing neutral colors yourself, and maybe a cute outfit for your babe (I'm a huge fan of Lou Lou and Co).
Can I do both?
YES! I am a big fan of wrapped/styled photos as well as newborn photos and try to give my clients a bit of both, and if you've followed all of my suggestions in this post, there's a good chance we'll have time.
So how are we feeling now? More educated? Confident? Prepared? Excited?
All of the above, I hope! The main thing to remember is that no matter which you decide on, you're doing an awesome thing by getting their photos professionally taken. They are going to look back on and love these photos forever. Can't wait to take them! Susan Joy Film + Photo
